Understanding the uses of your Raw Detergent Chemicals

In this article, we briefly cover the characteristics of SLES – an essential ingredient if you are making soap or related products.

What is SLES?

Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES) is a kind of anionic surfactant with excellent performance. It has good cleaning, emulsifying, wetting and foaming properties. It easily dissolves in water, is compatible with many surfactants, and is stable in hard water. It is biodegradable with low irritation to the skin and eye.

What is SLES made from?

SLES is produced industrially from palm kernel oil or coconut oil. Simplistically, it is converted to a half ester of sulphuric acid, which is neutralized by conversion to sodium salt.
